• You can leave a confidential voicemail at (703) 495-3808. I check my voicemail daily and. I try to return calls from prospective clients within 48 hours, or the next business day for calls left over the weekend.

If you prefer, you can also contact me by email at sonia@drsoniakahn.com. However, since the security of email cannot be guaranteed, please do not include sensitive clinical information.

  • My rates vary depending on the length of the session and the modality of treatment. Typically my rates are:

    • $215 for individual therapy (45 min)

    • $115-230 for clinical supervision & consultation

    • $300 for couples/relationship therapy (60 min)

    • $125 for group therapy

    DO YOU OFFER REDUCED RATES?

Reduced fee services are available on a limited basis and are offered due to financial hardship.

NOTE: These appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please call for availability and/or additional questions.

  • Session length and frequency of appointments will depend on the type of session and the treatment plan we devise together.

That said, I typically see individual clients weekly (for 45-minute sessions), unless they have joined a therapy group. When clients are being treated with both modalities, we typically decide to meet less frequently one-on-one.

All group sessions are held weekly for 75-minutes.

Couples typically meet for one hour per week if they are seeing me individually. If we are working in a co-therapy couples model, we will likely meet twice per month for an hour (along with your partner and one of my co-therapists) and 2-4 times per month, individually.

  • Cash, check, and ACH bank transfer via Zelle.

I also accept FSA, HSA, and all major credit cards via the SimplePractice client portal (+3.1% credit card processing fee).

  • Due to the sensitive nature of therapy, I have opted not to contract with insurance carriers. However, my services may be covered using your out-of-network health insurance. You can also pay for sessions using a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA).

Working with an out-of-network provider allows you to receive treatment regardless of diagnosis or the number of sessions needed. It also optimizes your privacy. That said, many insurance plans will provide partial reimbursement for our therapy sessions. Whether this is possible and, if so, how much you would be reimbursed, can be found out by contacting your insurance company and asking a representative the following questions:

    • Does my plan have out-of-network mental health coverage?

    • What are your reimbursement rates for mental health services with an out-of-network psychologist?

    • What is my annual out-of-network deductible, and have I met it for this year? When does it reset?

    • Is there a limit to the number of sessions that are covered?

    • Do I need prior authorization, or a referral from another provider prior to starting psychotherapy?

    • What is the process for obtaining reimbursement? Can I submit my claims online, or via email?

During this conversation, an insurance representative may ask you what CPT code would be used during treatment. The CPT codes used most frequently include:

    • 90834 - Individual therapy, 45 minutes

    • 90853 - Group therapy, 75 minutes

    • 90847 - Couples/Family therapy, 60 minutes

  • Unfortunately, SKPW does not have the support staff necessary for filing claims on your behalf. That said, I am happy to help you navigate this process in whatever way I can, including walking you through the process and helping your submit your first claim.

If you do plan on submitting for reimbursement, I highly recommend that you keep track of your claims. To that end, I created a tracking spreadsheet for my clients to aid with this process, which you are free to use if you would find it useful:

    PDF (Printer-friendly)
    Excel Workbook
Google Docs (Read-only; Make a copy for your own use.)

  • Outcome research on the efficacy of psychotherapy has repeatedly found that clients find the most improvement and satisfaction in their weekly individual therapy when they stick with it for at least 6-12 months. And for the majority of my clients, progress increases from there. Longer therapies have also been associated with long-lasting change—i.e., improvements that tend to be maintained for years.

Of course, the length of an individual’s treatment and the type/frequency of sessions will be influenced by many factors, including (but not limited to) the client’s presenting problem(s), level of functioning, and motivation for insight, growth, and change.

  • The Doctorate of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree is conferred to psychologists who obtain educational and practical training in clinical psychology. I decided to seek a Psy.D. (over a Ph.D.) because it is a clinically-focused professional degree that emphasizes clinical theory and technique over research methodology and lab work.

A Certified Group Psychotherapist (CGP) is a clinical mental health professional who meets internationally accepted criteria for education, training, and experience in group psychotherapy. To receive this designation, therapists must receive specialized training in group therapy and have extensive, supervised group psychotherapy experience.
